Jaguar Type 01: The Electric Jaguar That Changes Everything

Jaguar's dramatic new electric GT marks the beginning of a completely new era for the iconic British brand.

Jaguar has officially entered a new era. The all-new Jaguar Type 01 is the first production model built on the brand's new Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA), and it is about as far removed from a conventional Jaguar as you could imagine.

It's a four-door electric GT with dramatic proportions, supercar-rivalling performance and a level of technology that makes it clear Jaguar isn't simply replacing its existing cars with electric versions. This is a complete reset for the brand.

A Jaguar unlike anything before it

One look at the Type 01 tells you that Jaguar has taken a very different approach. The long bonnet, extremely low roofline, huge 23-inch wheels and short overhangs give it a presence that is difficult to ignore.

The design is deliberately bold, with Jaguar describing the Type 01 as its most aerodynamic production car ever. It has a claimed drag coefficient of just 0.23, helping the car make the most of its large battery and impressive electric range.

And there's some meaning behind the name. The Type references Jaguar's history, the 0 represents zero tailpipe emissions, and the 1 marks this as the first model of a completely new generation.

Underneath that dramatic bodywork is some seriously impressive hardware.

The Type 01 will be available with up to 1,030PS and 1,365Nm of torque, giving it the performance to match its looks. The most powerful version can accelerate from 0–62mph in just 3.2 seconds.

It's worth remembering that this isn't being positioned as a stripped-out performance car. Jaguar sees the Type 01 as a luxury GT, so the aim is to combine its performance with the comfort and refinement you'd expect from a flagship Jaguar.

Up to 400 miles of electric range

The Type 01 gets a 118kWh usable battery and Jaguar expects it to deliver up to 400 miles of range on the EPA test cycle.

Jaguar also says the car could manage up to 320 miles of highway driving at a constant 75mph, which is a useful indication of how seriously the company has approached long-distance electric driving.

Charging performance is equally impressive. Using a 350kW DC rapid charger, the Type 01 can add around 200 miles of range in as little as 13 minutes.

The car uses an 850V electrical architecture, helping Jaguar deliver the rapid charging speeds you'd expect from a modern high-performance EV.

A very different Jaguar interior

Inside, Jaguar has continued the radical approach. The Type 01 has been designed around a central architectural spine, separating the driver and passenger areas while creating a distinctive four-seat cabin.

The materials and layout are intended to feel more like a luxury lounge than a traditional sports car, with plenty of space and a minimalist dashboard replacing the more familiar Jaguar interior design we've seen in previous generations.

Technology at the centre

A huge 24-inch central OLED display dominates the dashboard, giving the Type 01 a very different technological feel from Jaguars of the past.

But Jaguar hasn't simply added screens for the sake of it. The interior has been designed around what the company calls a more immersive digital experience, with technology integrated into the architecture of the cabin rather than simply placed on top of it.

Designed and built in Britain

Despite the radical new direction, there is an important connection with Jaguar's British heritage.

The Type 01 has been designed, engineered and will be manufactured in the UK. Production is due to begin in 2027 at Jaguar Land Rover's Solihull plant, with the electric drive units and battery packs produced in Wolverhampton and pressed body panels made at Halewood.

Jaguar says more than 360 patent applications have been associated with the Type 01, underlining just how much new technology has gone into its development.

How much will the Jaguar Type 01 cost?

This is where the Type 01 moves firmly into luxury GT territory.

UK pricing currently starts at £129,950 on the road for the 1,030PS Type 01. Jaguar says orders will open in early 2027, with the first customer deliveries expected during the second half of 2027.

That puts the Type 01 up against some very serious competition, but Jaguar clearly isn't trying to compete on price. This is a statement car designed to establish what the next generation of Jaguar should look and feel like.

The start of a new Jaguar

The Type 01 is much more than a new electric car. It is Jaguar's statement of intent.

Whether you love the design or think it's a little too bold, there's no denying that Jaguar has taken a risk. After years of uncertainty around the brand's future, the Type 01 gives us a very clear idea of where Jaguar is heading: electric, luxurious, technologically ambitious and unmistakably different.

For anyone considering a high-end electric GT, the Type 01 is certainly one to watch. With orders opening in 2027, we'll be hearing a lot more about it before the first cars reach UK roads.
